Split, Croatia August 29-30, 2019

After arriving in Milan we checked into the Sheraton hotel at the airport. We were both pretty tired and we had to get up at 3:30 in the morning so we went to bed early. We got up at 3:30 am and caught the 4:30 shuttle bus to Terminal 2, where we had tickets on Easy Jet. The check in process was pretty easy, as Blaine had paid for Easy Jet Plus bag drop and priority boarding. Once we got to Split we caught a bus to the ferry terminal. Although it was only a 10 minute walk to the Hotel Bellevue, where Evan and Jess were staying, we didn’t know that, so we ended up paying 100 kuna ($15) for a taxi ride. We could have easily walked there, but oh well!! Once we got to the hotel we helped Evan and Jess move all of their stuff to the new apartment, which was actually right around the corner.

The apartment that Jess booked was fabulous. It was a 3 bedroom, 3 bath unit close to everything. The first day we just explored the town. I was not really expecting the food to be that great, but I was pleasantly surprised. We had lunch at Konoba Fetiva. Evan & I ordered the fish platter, which consisted of sea bass, tuna, shark, hake, and sea bream. Delicious!

After lunch we walked around the walls of the Diocletian’s palace, which is an ancient palace built for the Roman emperor Diocletian at the turn of the fourth century AD, which today forms about half the old town of Split. While it is referred to as a "palace" because of its intended use as the retirement residence of Diocletian, the term can be misleading as the structure is massive and more resembles a large fortress, about half of it was for Diocletian's personal use, and the rest housed the military garrison.

The next day we had to check out of our apartment by 10AM and our ferry to Vis didn’t leave until 3:00. We were able to leave our bags at the apartment until 2:00, so we just walked around Split. There were actors from Rome walking around in ancient garb to celebrate Diocletian Days. It was really hot !! Jude liked the dragon at the Game of Thrones Museum.
